Most people believe that optimum cable size is 9/16” 6×7 strand rating. however, swabbing well depths up to about 6,000 feet, 7/16 6×7 cable works well

Cable or “sand line” working load limits vary with size and construction. A rule of “thumb” is operating loads of 33% of breaking strength gives good cable life and safety factor in swab operations. The rating for 9/16” 6×7 cable breaking strength is 26,000 pounds. Breaking strength for 1/2″ 6×7 cable7/16 6×7 sand line is 15,800# Breaking strength of 7/16” cable sand line is 15,800#

If swab drum is too small to hold the length of cable your wells need, A new option is to consider “swedged cable” this is cable that has been Pulled through a smaller die. Meaning 9/16” diameter cable can be “swedged” to 1/2″ diameter. The rating or breaking strength is between 1/2 and 9/16”.

Usually “swedged cable” will work very satisfactory in swabbing operations and can help solve the problem of needing more capacity on the swabbing drum

On-land drilling is much less invasive and much more controllable. With the BP oil spill a mile below water, stopping the leak will take months—possible till August. Such a leak couldn’t occur above ground. Above ground rigs work like straws, gently pull oil up out of the ground while only disturbing a small portion of the area, and not in a dramatic way. Being able to offset the need for deep water drilling by using more swabbing rigs and above ground oil rigs would ultimately mean fewer disasters of the same proportions as the current spill.

According to the Project for Excellence in journalism, the top two stories in the past week were the Elena Kagan Supreme Court nomination and the BP Oil rig explosion.

The Oil rig won out, getting 17% of all media coverage this week. Kagan got only 13% of the media coverage. The disparity in media coverage says a lot about how important of a commodity oil is. When the oil market is disrupted, the oil industry gets  a monumental about of media coverage.

Moises De Leon states they invested in three more Swab Master Machines because the are far more efficient than chain drive rigs. Maintenance is about half of chain drive rigs. Moises also stated fuel consumption with the International engines are only about two gallons per hour. That’s far less then the Detroit engines. The old Detroit engines use as much as 4-6 gallons per hour. Swab Master machines deliver substantial savings.
